Math Lab Summer Camp #1 - The Art of Math - June 29 - July 2, 2009
|
Monday - June 29 Today we began by playing a "get to know you" game called Please Tell Me.... Each camper rolled a ball to another person and asked him/her a question that could only be answered with a number - e.g. What year were you born? Next pairs of campers moved onto the lawn amid signs labeled with multiples of 100 to play the Round Up Game. We reviewed rounding up by using the analogy of taking a boat across a lake to a candy shop. If the boat stops halfway, you could swim back or swim to the candy shop, it's the same distance. Why not head for the candy?! :) In the Round Up Game, a number between 1 and 999 was shouted out, and the campers had to find the right round-up sign. After a snack and water break, we launched our main activity for this week - building a castle or skyscraper from recycled materials. Using sidewalk chalk, the campers drew their dream buildings. Next, using wooden blocks, these drawings came to life in 3D. Then each camper drew a building plan on graph paper and identified geometric shapes in the plan. Once this drawing was complete, the camper gathered the building materials. Finally, everyone joined together to build a city out of blocks represented by several interesting buildings. Tomorrow - Building Day |
